Multibit is a Bitcoin wallet that was released in 2011 and later abandoned in 2017. It was popular during the 2010s and, because of that, many people still own Multibit wallets as of today.
If you are looking to open a Multibit wallet, you will need to download a copy of the software. You will need to determine if your wallet is either a Multibit Classic wallet or a Multibit HD wallet, as these require two different software.
How do I know if I need Multibit Classic or Multibit HD?
You can determine the software you need by looking at your wallet’s file extension.
| If you have… | You need… |
|---|---|
A file ending in .key, .wallet, or .wallet.cipher |
Multibit Classic |
A file ending in .wallet.aes or .zip.aes |
Multibit HD |
If you are unsure, there is no harm in attempting to access your wallet with both software to see which one works.
Next steps: migrating to a modern wallet
Once you are able to access your Bitcoins, I highly recommend that you move them out to a more modern wallet, like Electrum. Multibit Classic and Multibit HD have been abandoned and have not kept up with the latest changes in the Bitcoin world. As such, they do not work correctly anymore and can even pose a security risk to your funds.
What if I’ve forgotten my Multibit password?
Every recovery case is unique, and success depends heavily on the wallet file you have and how much of your password you can recall. Generally, recovery involves brute-forcing, or using specialized software to automate millions of password guesses. You can reach me through my contact page for a free consultation.
