MyEtherWallet CX was a popular Chromium-based browser extension released in 2016 by the developers of MyEtherWallet (MEW). While it was discontinued in 2022 and rebranded as Enkrypt, many early users still have their original wallet data stored on old hard drives. If you used this software years ago to store your crypto but don’t know where the wallet files are located today, you are not alone.
To recover your crypto assets, you have two options: you can search for the wallet files manually or use an automatic scanning tool.
The manual way to find MyEtherWallet CX files
Finding MyEtherWallet CX data manually is a delicate process because the software does not save a single, neatly named
wallet file or folder. Instead, it stores information within Chromium database fragments.
To attempt a manual recovery, you must use your computer’s search function to find a folder named nlbmnnijcnlegkjjpcfjclmcfggfefdm.
If you manage to locate this folder, you will need to search inside it for files that end with the .ldb or .log extensions.
These specific files contain your wallet data.
The automatic way
While the manual approach described above is possible, it has several significant failings.
- Time-consuming: Scouring your entire hard drive for specific folders and files can take days of effort.
- Error-prone: It is incredibly easy to miss your wallet among the multitude of files on a modern computer.
- Version issues: You may have used a version of the software that stored wallet data differently from the most common versions, rendering manual searches useless.
- Hidden files: The manual way often fails if you tried to hide the wallet files by renaming them or moving them somewhere else.
- Lack of scalability: You cannot easily verify many computers or backups at once.
This is precisely why I created Treasure Hunter. It is an advanced software tool designed to automate this entire process, and it is significantly more effective than the manual way.
