Bither is a Bitcoin wallet known for its simplicity and security features. Like many wallets that gained popularity, it’s possible you used Bither some time ago to store your Bitcoins and have since forgotten where your wallet file is located. Now, with the value of Bitcoin having risen, you’re likely eager to regain access to those funds. But how do you find the wallet file if you don’t know where to look?
You generally have two options: search for the wallet files manually or use an automatic tool. This guide will cover both.
The manual way
One way to find your wallet is to look for the specific file Bither uses to store your Bitcoins. This file is named address.db
and is an SQLite3 database.
While this file could technically be anywhere, it is usually found in the Bither application data folder.
On Windows, you should look for the following folders:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\BitherC:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Bither
On Mac, you should look for the following folder:
/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Bither
If you find the address.db file in one of these locations, you’ve likely found your wallet. If it is encrypted, you
may need your password to decrypt it.
However, if you can’t find any of these folders or if the file isn’t present, things get more difficult. You could try
searching your entire computer for the address.db file, but this isn’t always reliable.
The automatic way
The manual method has several significant drawbacks. It’s time-consuming to check all these folders, and it’s
error-prone, as you might miss the file. Most importantly, it won’t work if you tried to hide your wallet,
for instance by renaming the address.db file or moving it to a different location.
This is why I created the software Treasure Hunter. It’s designed to do all the heavy lifting for you. Instead of you searching manually, Treasure Hunter scans your storage devices and is specifically designed to detect wallet files, even if you’ve renamed or moved them.
Treasure Hunter has several advantages:
- It works on Windows, Mac, and Linux.
- You can scan your storage devices for free.
- It can scan many types of storage devices, including HDDs and SSDs, USB keys, SD cards, CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs.
All you have to do is tell the software which drive to scan and let it do the work.
