How to Scan Your Computer for Bitcoin Browser Wallet Files

Sometimes, people reach out to me because they used various browser extensions to store their Bitcoins in the early days. Since those coins were worth very little at the time, many users eventually forgot about them. Now that their value has skyrocketed, they want to recover their digital wealth, but they have no idea where the actual wallet files are stored on their old computers.

If you are in this situation, you have two choices: you can spend time searching for the wallet files manually, or you can use an automated tool to do the work for you.

In this article, we will focus on one of these browser extensions, the Bitcoin Browser Wallet.

The manual way

The Bitcoin Browser Wallet was a browser extension used to store Bitcoins directly within a Chromium-based web browser such as Chrome or Brave. If you used this extension, your wallet data isn’t stored in a single, obvious file; instead, it is tucked away inside Chromium database fragments.

To find these files manually, you need to search your computer for a specific folder named liopgbfpkngindhbgplllgjhfpcfnmig. Once you locate this folder, you need to look inside it for files that end with the .ldb or .log extensions. These files contain your precious wallet data.

The automatic way

While you can certainly try to hunt down these files yourself, the manual method has several significant failings:

  • Time-consuming: You have to manually scour every folder on your hard drive, which can take a lot of time.
  • Error-prone: It is incredibly easy to miss your wallet among the multitude of files on a modern computer.
  • Version inconsistencies: You might have used a version of the wallet extension that stored files differently than the most common versions.
  • Hidden files: If you ever renamed your files or moved them to an obscure location to keep them safe, a manual search will likely fail.
  • Lack of scalability: You cannot easily check many computers at once.

This is why I created Treasure Hunter. My software is designed to be a much more powerful and efficient alternative to manual searching. It is built to detect wallet files even if you have tried to hide them by renaming them or moving them to obscure folders. Instead of you doing the heavy lifting, the software deep scans your hardware to find your wallet data.

Here are a few reasons why Treasure Hunter is the better choice:

  • Broad device support: It works on a wide variety of storage devices, including HDDs, SSDs, USB keys, SD cards, CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs.
  • Cross-platform: Whether you are using Windows, Mac, or Linux, you can run the software without issues.
  • Risk-free scanning: You can scan your storage devices for free to see if any wallets are present.

If you want to save yourself the headache of a manual search and give yourself the best chance of recovering your Bitcoins, I highly recommend giving Treasure Hunter a try.
