BitClip was a Chromium-based browser extension that allowed users to store Bitcoins directly within their web browser. Because it functioned as an extension rather than a standalone application, many users who bought Bitcoin years ago may have forgotten exactly how the software stored its data.
If you are trying to locate these old assets on an aging computer or hard drive, you have two primary options: you can search for the wallet files manually or automatically.
The manual way
The manual approach involves digging through your browser’s internal storage folders to find data fragments. Because BitClip is a browser-based tool, your wallet data is stored inside Chromium database fragments.
To locate them, you must search your computer for a folder named ijmpgkjfkbfhoebgogflfebnmejmfbml. Once you have found
that directory, you need to look inside it for files with the .ldb or .log extensions. These files contain your wallet
data, but extracting usable keys from these fragments can be technically challenging.
The automatic way
While the manual method described above is a starting point, it has several significant failings. It is incredibly time-consuming, as you must scour your entire file system for obscure folder strings. It is also highly error-prone, making it easy to miss your wallet among the millions of other files on your drive.
Furthermore, the manual way often fails for the following reasons:
- Version variations: You may have used a version of the wallet software that stored files differently than the most common versions.
- Hidden files: It doesn’t work if you tried to hide the wallet files by renaming them or moving them to an obscure location.
- Lack of scalability: You cannot easily verify many computers or drives at once.
This is why I created Treasure Hunter. It automates the entire search process and is much more effective than the manual way. It is specifically designed to detect wallet files even if attempts were made to hide or rename them.
Treasure Hunter does the heavy lifting for you and offers several key advantages:
- Broad device support: It works on HDDs, SSDs, USB keys, SD cards, CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs.
- Cross-platform: The software runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux.
- Free scanning: You can scan your storage devices for free to see if your wallet data is still there.
