How to Scan Your Computer for mSIGNA (CoinVault) Wallet Files

mSIGNA, which was also known as CoinVault, was an advanced Bitcoin wallet known for its strong security features, particularly multi-signature support. It allowed users to create wallets requiring multiple keys to authorize a transaction, providing a robust defense against theft.

If you used mSIGNA/CoinVault a long time ago to store your cryptos, you might be looking to access those funds now. However, after all this time, you may not even know where the wallet files are located on your computer. How do you find them? You have two options: you can search for the wallet files manually or automatically.

The manual way

The manual approach for finding mSIGNA wallets is particularly difficult. Unlike with many other software, wallet files generated by mSIGNA are not stored in a specific location. Thus, they can be anywhere on your computer.

Your best bet is to use your operating system’s search function to look for files with specific extensions. You may want to look for files whose name ends with .priv, .acct, .vault or .vault.all. These files will either be SQLite3 databases (their contents will start with SQLite format 3) or Boost serialization archives (their contents will start with 22 serialization). If you find them, you can open them up in a text editor, but the data will make little sense on its own.

Manual searches are very time-consuming and uncertain, as you have no default location to check. Moreover, the wallet filenames might have been changed for something obscure or inconspicuous.

The automatic way

The manual way has plenty of failings, especially for a wallet software like mSIGNA.

  • It’s time consuming. 🕰
  • It’s error-prone, and it’s easy to miss your wallet among the multitude of files. ⚠️
  • It doesn’t work if you tried to hide the wallet files, for instance by renaming them or moving them somewhere else. 🕵️‍♂
  • You may have used a version of the wallet software that stored files differently. 🧩
  • You cannot easily verify many computers at once; it doesn’t scale. 🚫

This is why I created the software Treasure Hunter. It is designed to solve these problems and is much better than the manual way.

  • You just tell Treasure Hunter which drive to scan, and it does all the heavy lifting for you. 💪
  • It works on a variety of storage devices: HDDs, SSDs, USB keys, SD cards, CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs. 💾
  • It works on Windows, Mac and Linux. 💻
  • It is designed to detect wallet files even if attempts have been made to hide them. 🧠
  • You can scan your storage devices for free. 🆓
